The St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals will clash in Friday night’s I-70 Series opener at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals took two of three when the two teams did battle in Kansas City back in May, but it’s the Royals that have won six of the last seven meetings between the clubs.
Kansas City Royals (34-23)
The Royals are off four consecutive wins over which they’ve held opponents to just six runs, but tonight they’ll hand the ball to the struggling Yordano Ventura (3-5, 4.62) who lasted just three innings in a 4-2 home-loss against the Rangers his last start, giving up all the four runs on six hits with two walks. The 24 year old flamethrower has fooled no one with his fastball of late and he allowed four runs on five hits in seven innings when he faced St. Louis back in May and this should be a good spot for the Cards to break out of their offensive slump. Matt Carpenter smashed a two-run shot off Ventura on May 24 to highlight his 5-for-10 performance versus Kansas City last month.
St. Louis Cardinals (39-21)
The Cardinals will turn to Jaime Garcia (1-3, 2.67 ERA) who’ll make his fifth start on the year. He’s lost three of his four outings despite pitching fairly well, and he’ll likely need more than a couple of runs to walk away with the W from this contest. He’s struggled immensely against the Royals in the past going 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA in four career meetings. Alex Gordon is 4-for-9 with a double and a homer against the southpaw and he’s 3-for-8 in his last three overall.
Trends & Conclusion
The Royals are 7-1 in Venturas last 8 starts during game 1 of a series and Royals are 9-3 in his last 12 starts with 5 days of rest. They’re however 1-6 in his last 7 starts overall and 0-4 in his last 4 starts versus a team with a winning record.
The Cardinals are 4-1 in their last 5 versus a team with a winning record but 1-4 in Garcia’s last 5 starts as a favorite of -110 to -150. The over is 4-0 in Garcia’s last 4 starts versus the Royals and we believe the value in this match-up is on the over as both line-ups seem to have a good grasp of the opposing pitcher.
