When: 10:20 PM ET, Monday, September 12, 2016
Where: Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, Calif
Line: Rams -2.5 / 49ers +2.5
The Los Angeles Rams will open their season with a visit to the Bay Area for a matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. The Rams opened as a 2.5-point favorite and the line has held steady despite 65% of the money coming in on the visitors.
The Rams have covered the spread in just one of their last six Monday night games and they’re an abysmal 3-12 ATS in their last 15 games in Week 1. The 49ers have covered the spread in five straight season openers and they’re 24-6 ATS in their last 30 Monday games.
The total opened at 45.5 but is now down at 42.5. Perhaps not all that surprising as the under is 8-2 in 49ers’ last 10 vs. NFC West and 4-0 in Rams’ last four vs. NFC West. opponents.
The Rams’ offense will be carried by 2015 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Todd Gurley. Gurley last season became the first rookie in NFL history with at least 125 rushing yards in four consecutive games. The Rams have another promising young player in rookie No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff, but he won’t suit up for this contest as second-year pro Sean Mannion will be the No. 2 quarterback behind starter Case Keenum. Keenum has won three of his last four starts and hee was 18-of-24 for 188 yards and a touchdown in three preseason appearances. The Rams have plenty of talent at wide receiver, and we should see a more dynamic Rams offense this season.
New 49ers head coach Chip Kelly led the Philadelphia Eagles to a pair of 10-win campaigns but was released with one game left last season amid growing player discontent. He has named Blaine Gabbert as his starting QB over Colin Kaepernick. Gabbert was 12-of-22 passing for 146 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions during the preseason. “He’s a good fit for what we want to get accomplished, and I have a lot of confidence in what he can do for us offensively,” Kelly said of Gabbert.
A lack of reliable targets for Gabbert will surely be an issue though; Torrey Smith is their top guy despite grabbing only 33 receptions in his first season with the 49ers last year.
Our Pick: Rams -2.5
The Rams have a more balanced team with more options when on the ball.
