Columbus Blue Jackets
Columbus (27-5-4) leads the NHL with 58 points, seven ahead of the Capitals. Not surprisingly, the Blue Jackets have the league’s top offense, averaging 3.46 goals per game and they’ve outscored the opposition 62-27 during their dominant run. That team stat is partially the result of a standout first half of the season by right winger Cam Atkinson who notched his 10th goal in 12 games when Columbus downed Edmonton 3-1 on Tuesday to boost his team-best total to 18.
Blue Jackets’ goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky is 25-5-2 with three shutouts, a 1.92 goals against average and a .934 save percentage on the season, and Columbus ranks 1st in the NHL in scoring defense conceding just 2.03 goals per game.
The Capitals (23-9-5), meanwhile, are third in the Eastern Conference and are currently riding a three-game winning streak of their own, most recently defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-5 in overtime on Tuesday. Captain Alex Ovechkin scored the overtime winner to bump his season total to 18 while Evgeny Kuznetsov ended a 17-game goalless drought as part of a four-point night.
The Caps success is largely due to team defense as they sit 3rd in the NHL for scoring defense, giving up a minuscule 2.14 goals per game. Goaltender Braden Holtby (1.98 goals against average, .929 save percentage) will look to continue his solid 2016-17 campaign and end the Jackets’ run one win short of the record. He was yanked Tuesday but is 8-3-2 with a career 2.83 goals-against average against the Blue Jackets.
Over is 13-4-4 in Blue Jackets last 21 vs. Eastern Conference while the under is 5-0-1 in their last six when their opponent allows five goals or more in their previous game. Under is 5-1 in Capitals last 6 home games and under is 20-8-1 in their last 29 after scoring five goals or more in their previous game.
