The Tampa Bay Rays have lost four straight and seven of their last eight to drop into the cellar of the AL East. They’ll visit the AL Central-worst Minnesota Twins for the opener for a four-game set Thursday night.
Matt Moore (2-3, 5.31 ERA) will take the ball for Tampa Bay. He was far from brilliant his last time out, giving up three runs and eight hits with three walks in 6 2/3 innings of Saturday’s 9-5 home win over the Yankees. He’s 1-0 with a 3.24 ERA in three starts against the Twins, though he hasn’t faced them since 2013.
Joe Mauer is 2-for-4 against the left-hander, but Oswaldo Arcia is 0-for-5 with three strikeouts. The Twins are batting a MLB-worst .219 against southpaws this season.
The Twins hand the ball to Kyle Gibson (0-3, 6.10). He’s been throttled by Tampa Bay in his career, losing all four starts with a gaudy 8.85 ERA while allowing the Rays to bat .360 against him. He’ll make his first start since April 22 because of a strained right shoulder but turned in an 0.96 ERA in two rehab starts with Single-A Advanced Fort Myers.
Twins are 2-11 in their last 13 home games. Twins are 1-4 in Gibsons last 5 home starts.
