This should be a closer game than the oddsmakers are expecting. With the total close to 50 points, LSU would need to score around 30 to cover the spread. I don't expect that to happen on Saturday. All season long a year ago, LSU failed miserably to put up points. I understand that this is a new offense with a new HC & QB (and good one's at that.) However, this is a very difficult opening game to have to start with.

Clemson's defense is also getting under appreciated in my eyes. Dabo Swinney always seems to have his guys ready for a real fight, especially in these games early on in the season. I wouldn't be shocked if the road Tigers upset LSU here given all of the emotions. Grab the points in the ABC game on Saturday evening.

I like UCLA to win and cover the short spread here on Saturday. The Bruins have the more proven quarterback in Nico Iamaleava, and new head coach Bob Chesney brings a strong winning background after taking James Madison to the College Football Playoff last season. UCLA also added 45 transfers, including explosive running back Wayne Knight, who produced 2,039 all-purpose yards in 2025.

Cal has talent, particularly at quarterback, but it is also debuting a new head coach and rebuilt roster. In what should be a close rivalry game, I give UCLA the edge in quarterback experience, offensive versatility and coaching track record.

Louisville +7 in Nashville is the side I want you holding. Not because Ole Miss is a mirage. Because 7 is too much juice to lay in a rented building before either offense has taken a real snap. Neutral site, ranked-on-ranked, first Sunday of the year. That is how hooks get fat.

You are not fading the Rebels to lose. You are fading them to win by more than a touchdown while both staffs are still installing. That is a different ticket. 27-24 Ole Miss cashes. 24-21 cashes. 23-20 Louisville is the gift. The moneyline is a dart. The number is the work. Public money will hammer the higher logo because it travels and it is on ABC. That is how plus-7 gets to the window looking like value instead of a prayer.

Do not buy this down to +6.5 and pay extra juice to sleep better. The 7 is the reason I am writing it. Sit on your hands. Let the first-game rust show up on both sidelines. If Ole Miss is up 14-0 at the half and still cannot punch the second one in, that hook starts earning its keep.

Neither of these teams is one I want to bet on, but this is the headline game of the night, so we're getting involved.

The Lane Kiffin storyline has followed LSU since the job opened, and the drama hasn't let up. As recently as yesterday, we were still sorting out whether LSU would roster players cut from NFL rosters. These are real distractions heading into a season opener of this magnitude.

Opinion on LSU is split — plenty of people are high on them, plenty are low. I land in the middle. They have the talent and the coaching, and they've dominated this head-to-head matchup historically. Clemson has underachieved the last few years and tends to come out slow early in the season. I think this Clemson team should contend in the ACC, but I've been burned before overrating them, and I genuinely don't know how they'll look on Saturday. Dabo Swinney should have his group ready, but there's real uncertainty here. Expect sloppy football from both sides.

This will likely be the highest-handle game of the night, but the tickets and the market don't line up. Despite the public hammering LSU, the line keeps dropping toward Clemson — and we're sitting right at a key number. That's enough for us to jump on the dog.

Most of the public sees this as a potential LSU blowout, but I think Clemson is a livelier underdog than the line suggests. We'll also sprinkle a bit on the moneyline at +305.

For my best free pick on the board here for Saturday, I am looking at the Nevada Wolfpack hosting the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Western Kentucky is off a nice 9-4 season, while Nevada struggled to a 3-9 year, and early on this line opened at -4 Western Kentucky. And despite some big action on the Hilltoppers, we have seen this line drop to close to a pick ‘ em on Saturday. Love Nevada to be good at home this season and for Western Kentucky to take a step back this season.
