Cleveland might be the healthier of the two teams. However, I'm still going to ride with the Thunder at home on Wednesday evening. Oklahoma City still has an extremely talented starting lineup, with a secret weapon on the bench in Bennett Stirtz who's ready to explode when given the opportunity. Yes, Oklahoma City is short haded. But, I don't expect that to stop Shai & Ajay in this one. Cleveland has been exploring options with Maleek Thomas entering the lineup as well. Even though he's an elite rookie talent, there's some inexperience that takes place at times. Mitchell also hasn't been his best self to begin the season. Give me OKC here.

Virginia opens the season at home as a heavy favorite, and the numbers from last year’s early home slate point the same direction. The Cavaliers went 16-1 at John Paul Jones Arena in Ryan Odom’s first season and finished 30-6 overall. Their home opener against Rider ended 87-53. A few nights later they beat Hampton 91-53 and later handled American 95-51. Those margins cleared the posted numbers cleanly against teams that sit in a similar range to Drexel. The Cavaliers averaged 80.4 points while holding opponents to 68.8 and controlled the glass at a high rate. That combination showed up most clearly when the opponent could not match their length or athleticism for a full 40 minutes.

The system contrast is simple. Virginia plays an efficient, balanced style that generates points in the paint and off turnovers while protecting the rim and the boards. Drexel finished last season at 17-16 and scored just 68.1 points per game. The Dragons were respectable defensively and limited three-point shooting, but they went only 4-9 on the road and rarely forced the kind of half-court grind that holds up against a higher-level frontcourt. Their offense relies on perimeter creation and secondary scoring that has not traveled well against power-conference length. When the shot clock shortens and the rebounds start swinging one way, the Dragons have historically struggled to keep the score within striking distance.

Player-to-player, the edge sits inside and on the glass. Virginia returns the size and physicality that produced those early blowouts last year, including the interior presence that alters shots and finishes second-chance opportunities. Drexel’s leading scorer from last season, Shane Blakeney, put up roughly 14 points and five rebounds, but the rest of the roster lived in single digits. The Dragons’ perimeter players will have to create against length that closes out hard and rotates well—something they rarely see in the CAA. Past meetings between these programs are old, yet Virginia’s recent home results against comparable mid-major squads show the same pattern: early separation that grows in the second half once the home crowd and the rebounding edge take over.

The sharp trend lines up with the rest of the card. Power-conference home favorites of 20-plus points in the first several games of the season have covered at a better rate when the game is played at home rather than in a neutral environment. Virginia’s own early-season home results last year against Rider, Hampton, and American fit that pattern exactly. Drexel’s road scoring output and limited interior size make it difficult for them to stay within 31.5 for a full game against a team that already proved it can turn similar matchups into comfortable covers. The number is large, but the combination of Virginia’s home environment, rebounding margin, and the historical early-season large-favorite edge at home has repeatedly produced the separation needed

My selection is on the 'over' between Ohio and Akron at 7 pm et on Tuesday.

Akron is an awful defensive team but unlike past editions, it can put up some points offensively. The Zips have allowed 6.2 yards per play or more in five of their last six games and six of eight contests overall this season. They'll have their hands full against an Ohio offense that has been rolling lately, gaining 7.3 and 6.6 ypp over its last two games, respectively. On a positive note, Akron has scored 20 or more points in two of its last three games and has gained 5.0 ypp or more in four of its last five contests. It's easy to project a letdown from the visiting Bobcats here as they roll in on a five-game losing streak and I think 'under' bettors have gotten a little too comfortable with four of hteir last five contests staying 'under' the total. The 'over' is 5-3 in the Zips eight games to date this season. Take the over (8*).
